ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a checklist of items that should be considered in the design of a thermal oxidation system or when preparing a specification to obtain quotes on the design and purchase of this equipment. When preparing an equipment specification, the purpose of the thermal oxidizer should be enumerated. If the source of the waste stream is known, equipment vendors may find that they have had experience with that identical off-gas in the past. The importance of specifying the complete range of process conditions is often overlooked by the end-user when specifying a thermal oxidizer. The temperature, pressure, and composition of the waste stream, including any particulates present, must be specified for each condition. Many times there is more than one normal operating condition. The thermal oxidation system is usually subjected to a performance test during start-up. This test is intended to verify operability, fuel consumption, and compliance with emission limits.
