ABSTRACT

I live in an old house with an ancient heating system, that has been converted from coal to oil, and is controlled by a single thermostat. Several times a winter, we have a visitor who usually sits in the same chair and on occasion complains that our house is “cold”. Whenever this happens, my wife jumps up and raises the setting on the thermostat. Soon, I feel hot. I cannot insult my guest by getting out a thermometer and placing it near her chair. So Dear Abby, is there any way of doing some measurements when nobody is here that will enable me to see how valid the complaints are?
