ABSTRACT

Multilayer soil/sediment bed models are used in systems in which zones of distinctly different properties are present. Examples of such systems include soil columns with layering due to natural sedimentation, contaminated soil capped by clean earthen material, systems with a bioturbated top zone, and those with a combination of dry and damp zones. This chapter presents the solutions giving the mobile phase concentration profile and surface flux rate for several two finite layer systems. It analyzes both cases where surface mass transfer and contaminant decay are significant and insignificant. The chapter summarizes these solutions and discusses the numerical evaluation of these solutions. The system equations were solved using a separation of variables technique. The chapter outlines the development of the solutions. Both calculations for the concentration and surface flux require the sum of an infinite series of terms. As the terms tend to infinity, their effect on the solution decreases in significance.
