ABSTRACT

In the Netherlands the western part of the country consists of soft, very compressible soils (peat and soft clay). By the direction of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the High Speed Link and various road widening projects are being designed. To get a better understanding of the applicability of new construction methods two in-situ test sites were constructed. In the Abcoude testsite a testembankment was built using stabilized soil columns. In the Hoekse Waard testsite four different embankments were built using various new techniques. In this site the performance of these techniques was evaluated in relation to each other. One of the embankments was built on a foundation of stabilized soil columns. An extensive program of monitoring was carried out. Such as settlements and the quality of the columns were measured. In this paper some of the most typical results are shown.
