ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the relationship between the child diagnosed with ASD and those outside the immediate family. While some families experience isolation from extended family members who misunderstand ASD and the subsequent daily challenges, other families find extended family a lifeline in caring for the child with ASD. In addition to extended family, the author briefly and generally describes the relationship between the family and the general public, family friends, and school in order to help clinicians be able to better assist families to deal with extended family and society.
