ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the approaches that frame research in community settings. Inherent within all conceptual and theoretical frameworks that guide research are fundamental assumptions and organizing principles about the phenomenon under investigation. It highlights that two common frameworks for community research – the ecological framework and the empowerment framework and illustrates their application, drawing upon international examples of community research. The chapter considers some of the prevailing assumptions and values underlying models for community research. It illustrates the application of the ecological model in community research. The chapter explores the nature and definition of empowerment in the context of community research. It provides the value of ecological and empowerment approaches for understanding individuals and their environments is widely accepted. The chapter examines the need to be responsive to the range of stakeholders in community-based research, and practical strategies for maximising buy-in and engagement considered in key areas.
