ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book offers reflections on a range of issues that may critically shape where Afghanistan goes from 2018 onwards. It winds up with discussion of a number of scenarios for the future – none preordained but none implausible – and of the wider ramifications that could accompany them. The book argues that Afghanistan has drifted disastrously off course since the Bonn Conference because of the confluence of neopatrimonialism and insurgency. fghanistan inhabits a region that is shot through with distrust and hostility. This has led analysts to explore the need for a regional approach to the solution of Afghanistan's problems. Despite all the grief that Afghanistan has experienced in the last four decades, a surprisingly large number of Afghans remain attached to their country.
