ABSTRACT

Since the formation of the profession of horticultural therapy, different definitions and models have been used. This chapter explores the terminology surrounding horticultural therapy and how it has evolved. The history of the field, as well as well as the early pioneers who shaped it, continue to influence the profession today, including the basic elements of practice and how horticultural therapy is distinguished from similar terminology. Therapeutic efforts that are clinical in nature are emphasized and contrasted with gardening that does not involve treatment interventions. Education and experience needed to practice in this field successfully are explored, as well as the varied supporting organizations throughout the world that advance the field in a variety of ways. A discussion of the specific skills needed to practice, with an emphasis on professionally serving clients, shows how horticultural therapy is moving forward as a profession.
