ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the importance of modelling excellence and challenging mentees by providing the constructive feedback that will inform the development of suitably challenging goals. Being allocated the role of apprentice to a magician or master craftsman was a way to develop skills that would result in the ability to earn a living. In many professions this practice is highly valued, with apprentices learning from, and being guided by, experienced ‘elders’. Within fiction, these relationships also thrive and provide an opportunity to move a plot from one scene to the next. Throughout the Harry Potter series, Albus Dumbledore imparts his wisdom through both words and actions; he is at all times the master who openly shares his skills; subsequently, his apprentice observes, imitates and develops his competencies until he too is proficient in the art of magic.
