ABSTRACT

October in the UK sees a slow change from summer to autumn, with the weather becoming colder and the sun weaker. The children will have enjoyed a long summer where the importance of being outdoors has been easy to fulfil. For the next few months, the children may choose to play inside more often. Explaining to the children that many plants die back at this time of year is vital. Sending them away to look for dying foliage that contains seed heads will help. Giving the children a small yoghurt pot to collect them and a magnifying glass so they can look closely at them is a good idea. Providing paper and card, glue and double-sided tape and asking children to use their seeds to create some artwork is wonderful. Autumn is an amazing time of year to celebrate the seasonal changes in the environment. Using the ever-changing outdoor display area as a resource for children to explore is helpful.
