ABSTRACT

Turkey’s relations with its long-standing ally, the US, are in an unprecedented state of crisis. The list of issues over which both sides differ keeps getting longer. Democratic backsliding in Turkey but also in the world at large, accompanied by diminishing US interest in supporting the international liberal order at a time when it is under growing challenge from rival powers like China and Russia, are also complicating the relationship. Yet, geopolitical and structural realities also put a brake on the aspirations of those in Turkey and the US, who would like to break away from each other. This chapter discusses the affect that these dynamics are having on the relationship and its future.
