ABSTRACT

Five months before her 91st birthday in 2009, Elizabeth Rokie Mafeking passed away at her home in Mbekweni, Western Cape Province, South Africa – the home of her heart, and the land of her birth. 1 She was surrounded by four of her adult children, more than one dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren, extended family members, and beloved community supporters. 2 Mafeking dedicated her entire adult life to the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, and in the last moments of her life, she knew her decades of sacrifice had not been in vain. Mafeking lived to see the system of Apartheid crumble, her long-held dreams of an equitable, non-racialized South Africa come to life, and her children inherit the opportunity to live their lives with dignity and respect in the land of their birth. 3 The memorial and funeral services for Elizabeth Mafeking were a truly moving testament to her well-lived life. 4
