ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book offers many different perspectives on the inspection process. Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) published its first major revision of the Handbook in November 1995. They claim that this will be less burdensome for both schools and inspectors, and take more account of particular features of the individual school. Training of inspectors is clearly an issue for the future. If the inspection process is either by design or by implication 'high stakes' then inspectors must be fully trained to provide the quality of data that a 'high stakes' system requires. All inspectors will need regular updating and refreshing so that their judgements and interpretations are valid. Registered Inspectors and team members themselves are responsible for team members' in-service training. This will be particularly important as the new Handbook is implemented in mid-1996.
