ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a unique case: the occupation of the National Museum on the History of Immigration (NMHI) in Paris by undocumented workers or sans-papiers from October 2010 to January 2011. The goal of this occupation was to obtain residence permits and to be able to benefit from decent working conditions and labor rights and to stop being discriminated against. While the previous chapters focused on programs driven by the selected museums, the following pages consider an initiative driven by immigrants and their networks of supporters themselves. This chapter explains how the museum was used by the occupiers to obtain their residence permits. The attitude of the museum evolved from acceptation of this occupation to using the insecurity syndrome to put an end to it .
