ABSTRACT
It was the year 793 and England was enjoying a peace that, unknown to the English, was not going to last for long. In a small place in the north-east of England, the world was about to be turned upside down. This year marked the start of many hostile raids, hundreds of deaths and much misery: this was the beginning of the period of savage Viking history.
