ABSTRACT

The overview of the US energy system model provided in this chapter is intended to familiarize the reader with the general concept of the model by providing an introduction and a general description of the model without getting involved with the precise details of the linear programming formulation. The time phasing of the model was handled in a manner suggested by Manne. In this approach, the time horizon of the model is broken up into several time periods, with the midpoint years of the periods termed "representative years". Consideration of demands by end use also allows for a more adequate representation of demands and demand elasticities as it allows for a more adequate projection of the impacts of satiation and subsistence effects. The formulation of the end-use demand inputs starts with estimates for end-use demand growth rates that are applied to the 1974 levels of end-use demands.
