ABSTRACT

Managing interdependencies is a core task for managers of sub-units within organizations. In considering interventions to improve co-ordination, there is a tendency among managers to focus on one particular type of interdependency while ignoring others. However, one needs to manage multiple types of interdependencies that may exist between sub-units, related to activities, governance, commitments, resources, and social networks. The task is not only to find the best co-ordination mechanism when there is an interdependency between two or more sub-units, but to evaluate whether interdependencies may need to be added, eliminated, or adjusted.
