ABSTRACT
The chapter begins by a brief overview of the Classical period in terms of art, philosophy, literature, and science before discussing the various names used to describe the time span. The difficulty in determining the start and end points for the period during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are examined, along with the parallel developments politically of the late Baroque and early Classical period. Finally, an overview of the pedagogical and music-theoretical works is provided.
