ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on the other centers, mainly on the European periphery, noting the musical establishments, achievements, venues, and composers, all discussed in a chronological order. The first section outlines the Classical period on the northern periphery: the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Russia. The second section is devoted to describing music at the principal courts whose reputations as musical centers were established during the time span: Esterháza, Regensburg, Oettingen-Wallerstein, and Salzburg. The third section focuses on the musical life around the Mediterranean Sea, including Malta, Spain, and Portugal. The final part gives an overview of the music found in North and South America during the period, ranging from Canada to the Caribbean and from California to Chile and Brazil.
