ABSTRACT

The discussion outlines the major urban hubs of musical activity during the period, beginning with the acknowledged centers of Vienna, Paris, Berlin, and London. Each city is described according to the types of music, patronage, and venues, as well as the major composers active therein. It continues with a discussion of the Italian cities of Naples, Venice, and Rome, outlined as the hubs. The conclusion describes the musical centers of the Holy Roman Empire—Dresden, Prague, Munich, and Mannheim.
