ABSTRACT

The base of the social pyramid comprises people with the lowest income and earning power. The base of the pyramid, with untapped potential due to its myriad problems, indeed offers huge potential markets for products and services in many areas, including food, water, health, and small industries. If people are grouped by their wealth, the different tiers would form the structure of a pyramid. The needs of people at the base of the pyramid center around food sources and livelihoods, housing, energy, water, health, transportation, and information and communication technology. The needs of people at the base of the pyramid mostly concern essential products and services. People at the base of the pyramid have an increased burden in taking care of their health compared to those in higher tiers. Agriculture is important for people at the base of the pyramid, both to free themselves from hunger and to earn from its output.
