ABSTRACT
I moved jobs and a fellow head welcomed me warmly. ‘Of course, no one’s ever heard of you but we looked you up and you seemed to be doing a good job’. I was mildly outraged as well as amused. I’d moved 200 miles or so but I wasn’t unknown among educators. And what did it matter? Who said knowing him validated my existence? I’d only met him a month ago.
