ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Principles for Public Life and their use for heads and schools. Teachers make the education of their pupils their first concern, and are accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in work and conduct. The National Standards of Excellence for Headteachers are not mandatory but set out to: define high standards which are applicable to all headteacher roles within a self-improving school system. Schools need development or action plans to set their course each year and school leaders are expected to have ‘strategic vision’ to achieve their aims. Headteachers occupy an influential position in society and shape the teaching profession. Education is a huge concern of the state and school leaders should look at existing standards built into their schools. All qualified teachers in England, at all levels, at all times and in all places have to fulfil the Teachers’ Standards, which are embedded in their training.
