ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the core seven strategies for abuse prevention, the relationship between thoughts, feelings and risky behaviours, as well as 'early warning signs'. It explores how to establish healthy emotional boundaries, in order to educate children about conflict-resolution techniques, asserting self-respect, as well as the founding factors of healthy relationships. Protective behaviours refers to techniques children can use in order to lower their risk of being exposed to abuse and having their boundaries violated. During protective behaviour training, however, children are taught to look at the function of unwritten rules and beliefs, their effects, and how we might choose to follow them or not. The protective behaviours concept aims to teach children and young people 'seven strategies', which is a kind of non-shopping list of things which they can do if they are in an unsafe situation.
