ABSTRACT

This chapter describes about why mental health is not in the psychiatrists' focus of interest, and why they should deal much more with this topic, in particular with the definition of mental health. It analyses the three concepts of mental health: the clinical-pragmatic concept, the positive psychology view of mental health, and the concept of mental health as a critical attitude towards the given society. The chapter explores a possible classification of mental health states, and explain why this classification would benefit psychiatrists, psychologists, as well as those mentally healthy people who need psychological-psychiatric assistance. The adjustment, another element that appears in many definition of mental health, conceived of both as making use of socially approved means for attaining socially defined goals and as a sense of enjoyment it provides, is the same as normality. The creation of the classification of mental health states would be of much help in legitimizing provision of mental health services to that in need.
