ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the effective management of the accommodation spaces on board. These spaces include cabins or staterooms, public areas, crew areas and deck areas. Managing accommodation is frequently referred to as facility management, which is a burgeoning business activity worldwide, with contract companies overseeing the daily operation of services and premises management. For the cruise industry, facility or accommodation management is yet another core area for attention. In examining this area within the cruise industry, a number of issues are considered, including administration, yield management, design aspects, routines and schedules, and environmental issues. The constraints on planning accommodation, such as the need to utilise space economically, the increasing demand for enhanced passenger facilities and the current trend to ensure cruise ships sail on full capacity, are all important features for the industry.
