ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to develop synthesis for this textbook by making use of a range of data, including the findings from research projects and a series of case studies, to highlight key issues that exist for professionals at sea. The research and case study helps to illuminate the world of work in the hotel department on a cruise ship. The reader can make use of this chapter to understand a range of topics, including the establishment of communities of practice at sea; the impact of multiculturalism in the workplace; the complex nature of work–life dynamics at sea; the influence of cross-border operations on a ship’s routines; and how regulations influence working life on a cruise ship.
