ABSTRACT

Blood and its flow have been of interest to biomedical professionals for a long time since it is a fluid crucial to life. The second half of the last century saw experiments at cell scale, probing various cell properties and development of applications that involved cell handling or manipulation. But it was in the last two decades that we have seen a major development and applications branching out in various directions, such as the following:

• Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) - The idea is to miniaturise a laboratory to a portable chip that uses only small amounts of fluid. This area even has its own journal (appropriately titled Lab-on-a-chip) and encompasses several of the following more specific points.
