ABSTRACT
Dealing effectively with the problem of punishment requires moving beyond the system of moral responsibility: a system that encourages retributivism. The moral responsibility system makes us comfortable with justly deserved punishments and discourages deeper inquiry into the causes of problematic behavior. Moving beyond that obsolete system will require development of a new system and a new approach to the problem of punishment.
