ABSTRACT
The moral responsibility system—and its emphasis on retributive just deserts—is rooted in the primitive strike-back motive that is widely observed in animal behavior. Its deeper source is a strong desire to “pass the pain along” whenever we experience harm; and when that motive is combined with belief in a just world, it entrenches belief in the justice of retributive punishment.
