ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter provides preliminary information on concepts and terminology related to immune system and biomaterial interaction necessary for appreciation of the following chapters. The definitions pertaining to immune system, the main cell types and type of immune responses related to the biomaterials were covered. This is followed by the relevant biomaterial properties that are significant in directing immune response and potential immunomodulation means to evade or diminish immune reaction to biomaterials. Finally, the rest of the chapters were introduced in the context of their aim and focus.
