ABSTRACT

The background of ageing in Asia and the Asia-Pacific region is outlined in the context of ageing experience globally. Demographic ageing across the region has been rapid, although specific country experiences vary. Fertility rates and life expectancies are discussed, especially the very low fertility of many East Asian countries. Social and family changes following demographic ageing may include smaller family size; delayed marriage, non-marriage, divorce; declines in family support and filial piety; and potential social exclusion and isolation of older persons. These changes combine to raise major challenges for formal and informal care, health and welfare provision. Health and environmental challenges for older persons are considered, with a brief discussion of elderly poverty and associated consequences.
