ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part provides an overview of research on children of Hindu background, discussing how the authors dealt with various issues in representing them and their families in books written for young people in schools. It illustrates the diversity of experience in the religious upbringing of children from Christian families researched as part of the Economic and Social Research Council-funded 'Ethnography and Religious Education' project. The chapter presents an overview of Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit's (WRERU) research and focuses on the 'Young People's Attitudes to Religious Diversity' project. One of WRERU's first projects continued the tradition of studying the transmission of religious culture within families and communities. This was a longitudinal study of young British Hindus' perceptions of their religious tradition, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, conducted between January 1995 and December 1997.
