ABSTRACT

Cutaneous cysts are common growths that can present anywhere on the body, including the genital area. This chapter focuses on one of the most common subtypes—epidermal inclusion cysts. It discusses the more frequent skin diseases in children and adolescents that may affect the genital area. Dermatology is the study of the skin and adjacent mucosa, hair, and nails. Consultation with dermatology is warranted in patients with congenital nevi or a history of dysplastic nevi or melanoma. Treatment with topical acne products is indicated, and patients refractory to treatment should be referred to dermatology. By intervening early and referring to a dermatologist for refractory disease, providers can improve both the patient's skin and quality of life. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an acute inflammatory skin reaction that can result from a number of different allergens. Identification and removal of the inciting allergen is of paramount importance in treating ACD.
