ABSTRACT

This chapter explores issues that arise when providing confidential care to adolescent patients. Minor access to confidential care in the areas of sexual and reproductive health care is supported by public health data, adolescent health research, and ethical and legal justifications. The limitations of and potential threats to confidential care are important considerations for clinicians providing care in most clinical settings. Practical steps can be taken to manage parental and adolescent expectations for confidentiality and to mitigate potential confidentiality breeches.
