ABSTRACT
In each of the three regions covered by this book, we have reached back into the history of settlement form with the expectation of finding guidance for the future. Historically, settlements in all three low-lying areas were shaped by natural processes, chiefly water, landform and climate. We now understand that the same natural processes have taken on a new importance in the response to climate change.
