ABSTRACT

Before we jump into the house metaphor in a deeper way, we would be foolish not to discuss how any classroom management system would be set up to fail without effective planning. When we picture classroom management, it can be easy to imagine that most of it pertains to dealing with in-the-moment student misbehavior. Although that is one aspect of it, the most effective teachers are those who try to structure their classroom and lessons in a way that will help prevent student misbehavior (Whitaker, 2012; Emmer, Evertson, & Anderson, 1980). Since this book is written through the lens of classroom management, we will focus our discussion about lesson planning and instruction around two main concepts: organization and engagement. When we discuss organization, we will center the conversation around your classroom’s physical environment and lesson structures. In regard to engagement, we will give you practical advice that will help your lessons keep students actively interested, so potential misbehaviors will be minimized.
