ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses financial communications and investor relations and explore the profitability of these specialty areas and the compensation trends for the professionals in it. It examines career opportunities for these specialties within agencies and at companies; reviews the expected knowledge, skills, and competencies for those working in financial communications and investor relations; and provides recommendations for enhancing business and financial acumen. Financial communications and investor relations are well established disciplines that came of age in part due to the rise of investor interest in the stock market and financial products and services post-World War II. Turning to “in-house” financial communications and investor relations positions, most publicly traded companies have corporate communications, marketing, and investor relations departments. There are many ways to increase business and financial acumen in preparation for a career in financial communications and investor relations. Investor relations and financial communications are well-established specialty disciplines associated with public relations and corporate communications.
