ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a series of discoveries about inappropriate, incompetent, exploitative, or generally concerning behaviour by commercial security providers working in the domain of domestic violence. Private security providers have generally been involved in many examples of illegal and unethical behaviour, and often have a reputation for delivering ‘poor-quality services’ or being open to entry and exploitation from individuals with histories of criminal offending. The purpose of this chapter, however, is to outline and detail the empirical examples of concerning behaviour that were discovered in the course of this investigation. It will present original evidence of commercial security providers acting exploitatively, inappropriately, or incompetently and also detail how many of the wider criticisms of the private security industry manifested in the context of working with victims of domestic violence.
