ABSTRACT
A number of themes have been repeated throughout the text. From the earliest days of the American Republic to the present, no era has been without some debate or concern about rising crime, the perils of immigration, xenophobia, or trying to solve perceived social problems with various ill-conceived prohibitions. But few issues drive the public discussion on crime and the criminal justice system in the second decade of the twenty-first century than the American love affair with the gun.
