ABSTRACT

The research and analysis reported in the handbook show that major population changes have taken place in Asia since 1950, and they have greatly altered the world demographic map. The concluding chapter summarizes the main demographic trends in mortality and fertility, population growth and density, age structure and population ageing, urbanization and migration, marriage and household formation and in human capital. The chapter closes with some reflections on the implications of these demographic trends for further development in Asia during the remainder of the first half of the twenty-first century, especially during the period 2015–2030.
