ABSTRACT

The therapeutic story is an indirect expression, and children often feel relieved after hearing one, because of the built-in empathy and resolution at the end. In a school, it can be good to have a special place in the room just for stories, so the child quickly associates this place with calm, and with story. Some therapeutic symbols may speak very loudly to a child, so let him take these in. If a child wants to repeat telling of the story that is a very good sign: it means he is really thinking and feeling about its message; he is making it his own, imbuing it with meaning from his own life and circumstances. For a therapeutic story to have a deep psychological impact on the child, it must speak to him about the emotional issues he is busy grappling with, and also about his current ways of coping, which are costing him too much.
