ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the deployed experience at sea gained during Operation Telic, and particularly the first roulement and the secondary care work carried out aboard Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Argus. The size of the deployment, the nature of providing medical care at sea and the variable operational estimates all posed considerable challenges in the planning and implementation of medical care during Operation Telic. The Royal Navy contributed to personnel, equipment and expertise in support of operations in Afghanistan. Incident reporting and lessons identified for Role 2 or Role 3 medical care on any maritime platform will be owned and acted upon by the new Deployed Hospital Care (Afloat) Command Team based at Naval Command Head Quarters. The chapter demonstrates the difficulties in recording and retention of corporate knowledge and experience. Deployed individuals should be encouraged to keep diaries with the express purpose of recording minor and major learning points.
