ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book investigates what students need to know and be able to do with multimodal texts by tracing the change in the concept of literacy to consideration of literacies and multiliteracies. It introduces the Action Learning Cycle as a way of examining and changing teaching practices around new texts, multiliteracies and multimodality. The book explains how the Action Learning Cycle and how it can be used to support the design and redesign of teachers' pedagogy. It provides tools and Action Learning Tasks that enable the reader to commence their own Action Learning Project as an individual, or as part of a group or school engaging in an Action Learning Cycle. The purpose of this Action Learning Task is to assist us to frame our project by completing the Action Plan Proforma.
