ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on writing, that is producing multimodal text. It begins by briefly discussing what writing is and the challenges involved in producing text, particularly in a multiliterate world. A piece of writing or text is produced to communicate a message to an audience. The producer of the text selects from the semiotic systems and technologies to design a text with a particular purpose, context and audience in mind. Similar to the teaching of reading, early approaches to the teaching of writing were skill based and the associated pedagogies resulted in the skills of writing being taught separately from the practice of writing. Furthermore, the actual teaching of writing in the skills approach was largely implicit. The associated classroom practices that arose from research into the writing process approach focused on students taking control of their writing and writing for real purposes and audiences.
