ABSTRACT

‘Common complaints’ examines a wide range of objections to atheism. It begins with complaints grounded in the kinds of stereotypes discussed in the preceding chapter: atheists are fundamentalists, atheists are political ideologues, atheists hate gods, atheism is just another religion, atheists are anti-religion, atheists are immoral, atheists are ignorant, atheists are horrible, atheism is unliveable. The discussion then moves to an examination of arguments against atheism, in the context of the allegation that atheists are irrational, at least with respect to their atheism. The conclusion of this final part of the discussion is that there are no successful arguments against atheism.
