ABSTRACT

Just like the fields of green and sustainable development, the emerging field of regenerative development becomes limited when it focuses on external practice— the innovation of extrinsic technologies and best practices––without simultaneously focusing on the development of internal practice––the psychology of mind––that is brought to bear on guiding and developing regenerative level work. Understanding the, often unconscious, frames of mind that we bring to this new field of development and the implications for how they influence and possibly delimit the potential of our practice is critical. Toward this end, this chapter explores four distinct psychological paradigms that, subtly and not so subtly, influence the way we relate to and work on the development of a place. The chapter also explores the implications of these paradigms for defining a regenerative psychology framework that can help in guiding the innovation of our extrinsic practice.
