ABSTRACT
This chapter will first examine a possible sequence of steps to build a virtual human. An example of a virtual human under development will then be considered before describing some typical roles that a virtual human might fulfil at increasing levels of sophistication. Finally, the concept of a virtual human will be considered through a number of different lenses, and, in particular, whether a virtual human needs to be more than the sum of its parts.
