ABSTRACT

This chapter situates the practices, strategies, and perceptions of Iranian academics amid increasing pressures for English language publication in Iranian higher education. Following a diachronical examination of policies laid out by the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, this chapter highlights emerging and established scholars’ perceptions of what constitutes a “good” research article, the challenges that exist when attempting to achieve publication of their research, and the strategies employed to overcome these obstacles. Analysis of higher education policies alongside semi-structured interviews with 17 faculty members and 20 graduate students suggest that scholars’ individual scholarly writing for publication decisions is heavily impacted by national and institutional policy. This chapter concludes with a call for greater access to language (for scholarly publication) support, materials, resources, and international networks for Iranian scholars as they attempt to meet the increasing expectations for scholarly publication amid international political tensions.
