ABSTRACT

The relationship between expectations and goals was powerfully illustrated by Jim Kouzes, who shared the story of Don Bennett. Focusing on a goal that, despite pretty intense physical effort, continues to look unattainable can be very discouraging. They approach whatever goal they are trying to achieve by celebrating their progress rather than being discouraged by the difficulty or the time it may take to reach the goal. Mental reframing, as we did during our mountain climb, can be very powerful in battling the yin and yang of expectations and goals. The chapter suggests that, rather than stare at the summit, they take note of where we were, climb for fifteen more minutes, and reassess. It describes about what it would take to prepare for the climb, and a few weeks later took them to Mount Baldy. At 12,805 feet, it was a challenging but reasonable climb for first-timers.
